Houses and Stinkfish, Number 5
The journey through the neighborhood continues.
The house:
This is the Michigan Library and Historical Center.
Not technically a house to the extent that no one lives there. And, ok, if this is a blog about my neighborhood it might not technically be "in my neighborhood" because it is a block east of Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and the Westside neighborhood stops at MLK Blvd.
And yet, what is a library but a House of Knowledge? And if the "west" in Westside means "west of the Capitol Building" then the Michigan Library (aka the House of Knowledge) is in my neighborhood.
To make a long story short (too late!) the building is about a 15 minute walk from my house and I thought the picture turned out pretty good considering I've never tried to take a panoramic photo before. I really wish you'd stop being so damn pedantic and just enjoy your time with me! Jeesh!!
Before we get to today's stinkfish, I have some bonus content for you at no extra charge!

This was the inspiration for Carl Sandburg when he wrote:
The fog comes
on little cat feet.
It stalks over
freshly laid concrete
on silent haunches
and then moves on.
And now today's stinkfish:

I first came upon the image on the left and was not sure that it was 1937 rather than 1987 or 1957. Then a few paces down I found the one on the right and it was clear it was 1937. If you think it looks like a different date, I invite you to keep your opinion to yourself.
1937 was the year my dear mother was born. Less important events of 1937 include:
- The plough for laying submarine cable patented.
- Jim Margie, Philadelphia, bowls 900 in 3 (unsanctioned) games.
- "Prince Valiant" comic strip appears; known for historical detail.
- William H. Hastie becomes 1st Black federal judge.
- Elmer Fudd, originally Egghead, is a Warner Bros. cartoon character created by Tex Avery and Chuck Jones for the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies series, first debuting as Egghead in "Egghead Rides Again."
I find the cruel nickname "Egghead" offensive in the extreme. Mr. Fudd has always carried himself with dignity and grace and those of a more hirsute appearance only belittle themselves with such attempted taunts.
